Fuck the classics, unless that's what you ACTUALLY want to read. Read erotic novels, books only written by Real Housewives or just the paper. Just read, your aging brain will thank you.

i’m an off-an-on reader as well and i’ve come to accept that a good rom-com is usually the best way to get myself back into reading. they’re easy, light, entertaining. i don’t feel pressured to enjoy the book for being ā€œintellectualā€. i’ve come to like Mhairi McFarlane bc her books are not too predictable and she explores wider themes beyond just romance. i liked Just Last Night and If I Never Met you

Go to the book section your local Goodwill. The selection will likely be pretty small. Find something with an pretty cover (whoever said to not judge a book by its cover was a liar), cool title or interesting blurb. Don’t look up the book or the reviews. Just start reading and form your own opinions, without the internet. This method brought me to Philip Margolin’s thriller ā€œGone, but Not Forgotten,ā€ which I have never previously heard about. It may not be the best book I have ever read, but it is still a fun and intriguing mystery. Definitely a page turner.
