Saw this Bertolucci movie over the weekend and liked it quite a lot... yes I watched it bc NYT said it was the much better french/American version of Saltburn and that is correct… Impossible to find on streaming services for some reason so I had to watch it the illegal way with completely out-of-sync subtitles but it was worth it to me, perverted little freak that I am

not sure if it can well and truly be called a french new wave film for a lot of reasons (not quite french, not released in precisely the right time period, etc.) but i think a good entry point to the kind of surrealist, vibes-oriented as opposed to narrative-oriented filmmaking that "foreign films" (especially European) tend to evoke / get clowned for in American media it's funny, it's bizarre, it has something to say but you might need a couple watches to get it (at least i did)

I had this movie recommended to me by a teacher in high school (shoutout Mr. Hicks!) and I bought the criterion physical copy. I absolutely loved it! It is one of my favorite movies to recommend to people wanting to dive into French cinema.

It’s my all time favorite movie starring French bombshell Audrey Tautou and really the only recommendation I’ll ever have. She’s a sexy gold digger. Heā€˜s a charming waiter. It’s chic. It’s romantic. It’s fashion. It’s French. It’s everything I want tied up with a bow. I watched it twice the day I got worst period. šŸ˜‡

This is a key rec for any context in which you need to burn a few hours by yourself, especially at a bar, coffee shop, restaurant, etc. where you dont just want to be staring into space. Bring a bunch of postcards or stationery and stamps to the bar, camp out at the best people-watching table in the corner, order a little drinky, and write out some postcards about your day to your friends. (pro tip: you probably have their addresses saved in Google maps) This is one of my favorite things to do when traveling alone...kill several birds with one stone by 1) sending sweet little trip updates to the besties back home šŸ’Œ 2) burning a few hours when you don’t know what to do with yourself šŸ•°ļø 3) looking busy while enjoying a bev in a nice place šŸø 4) getting off that damn phone for a bit šŸ““

dont treat your shit like it’s disposable! . My laptop is old as hell and doesn’t work unless it’s plugged into a wall, but you know what I am proud that I cared for it like the finely arranged clump of precious metals and plastics that it is instead of like something I have to upgrade because there’s been 10 new versions in the last 8 years I’ve had it. In fact it makes me a fucking saint. I also always hang dry my undies so they don’t stretch out and get holes in them from heat damage. Things will last if you invest just a modicum of care into them..additionally it feels really nice to be able to point to a hideous Victoria’s Secret thong on the drying rack and say ā€œI’ve had that for 14 yearsā€. Also probably in 2 more years gen alpha kids will point to my laptop and call it ā€œvintageā€, so that’s something to look forward to. Ok Rec over
