Going two for two here. I liked Little Brother because it was 1. set in my hometown but also because it was really palpable intrigue and didn’t seem demeaning at all with its politics and intrigue to a kid/young adult. The Nicholas Flamel series just got out there and instilled a certain interest in history while similarly not talking down to me, though at like 14 I embraced the whole “Vonnegut and above only” type vibe

Recently read and loved Foundryside, a heist book that explores the ethics of AI through a fantasy lens. Super engaging, the grown up version of the series that were popular when we were kids. Liked it enough that I bought the whole trilogy!
Amor Towles, Ted Chiang, and Annalee Newitz are all so good too.

of this one series but I remember reading it as a middle schooler in the early-00's and it was about a group of children with supernatural abilities. one girl was telepathic and listened to metal to drown out peoples thoughts, and there were some dark creatures that caused magnetic disturbances (paperclips made a big appearance) and now that I've written it out it sounds quite a bit like stranger things.
