not really into youtube qua youtubers, but I miss when people like this were the face of doing vintage / thrift deep dives.

this channel has become my fav on youtube. it's just a sweet little autistic man (he loves updating his audience about his special interest in trains) who makes long form video podcasts about obscure topics and historical events. his whole energy is very Nardwuar mixed with Mr Rogers. he's also got some great perspective and insights and a lot of his videos leave on a very thought provoking note. his channel made me really nostalgic when I first found it and I realized it's because it gives early youtube vibes. i miss when most of youtube was pure little dinky passion projects like this.

I adore finding a random video from like 2005 and reading through the comments the way a historian would examine an old manuscript from the 1700s. Are these people still active YouTube users? Or are they forgotten accounts? What did @jjlwis mean by "awww im gonna miss rob too!!!" ? Who even is Rob?? Anthropology in the digital age... so many questions... it's fascinating. The important thing for me is not to add new comments. I feel like I'm disturbing an old archeological dig site and my sticky modern commentary will make the video crumble away into oblivion. More importantly, I don't want the algorithm to suggest the video to a bunch of people who will spam the comments section– major yuck 🤢

I love Sufjan Stevens, Tori Amos, Mitski, the Carpenters, etc. a lot, but for about a week and a half a month, I’ll only listen to classical music. It’s like an acid peel for the soul, and I always feel refreshed afterwards. You have to be really making an effort to classicalmaxx as well & trade up your standard compilation choices for Lawes, Saariaho, Dutilleux, Lutyens, Gesualdo, etc.
