I wasn’t really into musicals until my daughter became hooked. Now I realise I have seen quite a number. Here is a ranking of the musicals I remember seeing, based upon my enjoyment of the performance on the day (best to worst) Hades Town Shrek (school production with my daughter as Fiona) Ghost Quartet Cabaret Godspell Bonnie and Clyde Shout (school production) Oklahoma West Side Story Cats Shrek (professional) Moby Dick (school production) Six Chicago (school production) Lion King Jesus Christ Superstar Heathers Phantom of the Opera (in Korean) Les Miserables And I am sure there are many I have missed (Nabi?). Most overrated: Les Miserables Nice tunes, but I have seen it twice and still can’t remember what happened Most disappointing: Heathers Love the music, but the production and performance on the day was underwhelming Earliest memory: Godspell Dad took me to watch it when I was about 9 years old. A fantastic afternoon as we first watched York City play football and then went to the York Theatre Royal for the show.

a very potter musical: despite starting theatre in 3rd grade i wasn't actually invested in theatre culture until I saw Hamilton, but this stupid parody satire musical defied all that and became one of my fav shows ever and it is still up there, if anything for nostalgia. hamilton (duh): I was obsessed in 6th grade and it truly kicked off my love of musicals and inspired me to listen and get into more shows. falsettos: I love the themes of found family in this as well as how eccentric and quirky the characters and music is. the revival is especially fun to analyze in terms of the production sets and such!!!! hadestown: my big flex is that i got into this before it was on Broadway and bc of that I do think the off Broadway recording is lowkey better with a better orpheus but I digress, no matter what form/version you listen to it is a beautiful and powerful adaptation of the classic myth! the guy who didn't like musicals: another starkid musical which got me back into my love of theatre, despite me no longer actually doing theatre. also honorable mentions for banger soundtracks: frankenstein, in the heights, jekell and hyde, bare a pop opera (PUHLEASE WATCH THE SLIME TUTORIAL WITH JONAH PLATT ON YT IT SLAPS I PROMMY), Mozart das musical (it's German and I only listen to two songs from it but those two songs are bangers even tho I have no clue what's happening), epic concept musical (jorge rivera-herrans my king), and paris the musical (it is so 80s and tacky but is hiding a few bangers)

I know there is a certain stigma around the "theater kid" but I love a musical. They (mostly) are a lot of fun and sometimes they can really make you cry and feel something. For instance, as I'm writing this I'm watching one of my all-time favorites "Gypsy" specifically the one with Bette Midler. This film is the original Dance Moms, literally a show about a mom who pushed her kids into show business so hard that one of them ran away and the other became a stripper (Okay burlesque dancer but the show is set in the 1920s so like the same thing). Now I should specify when I say musical I don't mean you should put on any of these new shows that are just adaptations of films with badly written scores. Watch any musical written pre-2010 and post-1950s and I can guarantee It will be a fun time (unless you're one of those people who says the singing doesn't make sense cause in the real world nobody would sing, stop hating fun!) All I'm gonna finish with is they are so fun and campy (sometimes) and often have lots of interesting ideas and ways of presenting them (like the film adaptation of Cabaret? so good).

I have been fortunate to have lived in some great cities in Asia: Seoul, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Only in Seoul and Hong Kong is it possible to take the subway and then within a minutes escape the concrete jungle and hike into real jungle/forest. Love it.

And the only one I‘ve watched twice. A perfectly formed series. Not too long. Fantastic acting, styling, cinematography. A simple but compelling storyline and a satisfying ending. Will have to watch it again soon.

I have just moved to Hong Kong and an impressed by the design of the subway system here. My commute to work involves three trains but only takes 30 mins door to door. Each interchange involves just walking across the platform to catch the next train on a different line. I haven’t seen this set up in other cities - are there any?
