used to read all the time as a kid before i got a phone and i was so much happier when i was reading 24/7 instead of scrolling. it seems boring at first, especially if you have my attention span (which is the attention span of a goldfish) but once you find the right book and really get in to it its awesome

always have a book with you and every time you idly grab your phone because you’re bored slap it outta ur hand and grab book instead also start with something fun that isnt ✨literature✨ to get your brain used to words again, this almost always works for me

reading is a habit of building and developing your empathy and critical thinking skills. you’re forced to sit with an idea for however long you are reading it and forced to contextualise it and comprehend it within your own life and perspective. You can’t just scroll away or pause or put it on 2x speed. you have to sit with it. it’s super underrated, but genuinely I’ve made this a habit for the last year and feel like a totally different person. also you come out of it having learned something new or seeing the world in a slightly new way. I literally do not see any downsides to reading. make reading cool again! also you don’t have to do it in one big block, you can space it out — 15 mins here, 45 there — whatever works for you!

i usually find myself in reading ruts when i’m taking classes and being assigned books or when i’m trying to keep up with new releases and the “smart” books that are usually dense and long. i can usually get myself out of this rut by picking out a book that looks fun to me, like a book set on a beach or something I loved in middle school. I’m reading From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler right now and it’s just FUN!!! I also am very much not someone who feels like they have to finish a book. Life is too short. I think that helps!

one of the best concept albums of all time. follows a young woman named Ethel Cain (the character, not the artist) as she encounters various men and eventually meets her violent death at the hands of one of the men. truly visceral and even disturbing at some parts but so so good, really recommend giving it a listen
