arrive early during the day and know the insects and animals in the area. take a VERY close look at the area and hang out a bit before before you put down your tent. make sure there’s a good amount of space between your tent and the woods.
a couple years ago i went with friends and we (unintentionally) set down our tent in a tick hotspot. we were waking up to ticks crawling on our legs. we doused everything in deet and were super careful about walking in and out of the tent, but it only helped so much. i will not book a specific site in advance anymore unless its in a large clearing because of this. make sure to bring deet and be prepared to move in case of the worst
