simply one of the best attempts at historical fiction that will ever be written. vonnegut has such a poignant and warm voice, something that slices through the pre and post apocalyptic nightmare world he has created. not only does he accurately comment on eras past (the cuban missile crisis, the bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki, etc.), he somehow manages to accurately predict key figures and events in years to come (false prophets, Jonesville, etc). i remember reading this for the first time when i was 14 years old and not understanding a wink of it. however, vonnegut's voice continued to rattle around my conscious in the years following - so much so, that when i decided to pick of reading again, there was no other novel i would even consider reading first. i'm so happy to be restarting my reading journey with one of the best novels ever written.

the romance between casey and silas was soo cute.. also i’d literally just finished catcher in the rye a few days before I came across this quote in w&l.. and i loved it with like a romantic amount of passion: β€œThere’s a bit of clapping, and I walk up to the podium. I see a few clusters of students I teach and many others I don’t know. Their faces are lifted up at me. I think of Holden Caulfield, wanting to catch the children before they fall off the cliff, and I get it now.” just makes me smile so much. the scene where holden talks about becoming a catcher in the rye is so beautiful and really made me emotional so this was a great callback

seriously, imagine the worst quality thing you can create in your medium of choice. Lean into the shit. Make it awful. Trust and believe you will learn more about yourself and maybe even stumble upon something beautiful.

a beautiful sexy exciting suspensful hell yeah of a movie. campy and high brow if you're of the epicurean pursasion or within that idealogical vicinity when it comes to movies. it makes a lot of heavyhanded stylized assertions which are good and cool, but it balances out with the subtly genius writing and tender sapphic love story.
