try out maxwellâs 1998 sophomore album âembryaâ. my personal favorite track is âluxury: cococureâ. delicious basslines, smooth + warm vocals and funky, dynamic percussion. very enigmatic and sounds just like the album cover looks. not on this album, but i also highly suggest his beautiful cover of kate bushâs âthis womanâs workâ. he makes the song very much his own, while still being loyal to the original. his experimentation, creativity and wide array of inspirations make it obvious as to why heâs seen as a pioneer of the genre.

max cooper just put out a new EP yesterday and itâs so good. i might have a preference for him since i met one of my lovers the night we saw his set after she bailed on the DJ she was planning to f***. i mean this guy has a PhD in whatever he does, so listen to it for yourself. his sound is exploratory and full of innovative compositions, but track 2 is classic max.

the original track and album are iconic for obvious reasons, but jamie brings a dreamy, ethereal quality to the production and sampling that elevates this track to some kind of angelic transmission from another realm

as the years go by i realized how much this dude has inspired me. somehow his songs captures the essence of night time, syrupy mysterious nocturnal grooves. itâs hard to recommend a proper entry point into his catalogue too, because thereâs so much and to me itâs all good. though i always fall back on his solo records âbete noirâ & âboys & girls.â it has the super hit âslave to loveâ obviously - but the other tracks are just as juicy - âwindsweptâ is a personal fav. each song features a different heavy hitter guitarist from the era too - which is why iâm so obsessed with it. heâs like a sweaty laid back lounge singer serenading you at 3AM, meanwhile these guitarists are just shredding behind him.
last saturday, i played a show and to get myself in the zone, i popped on âboys & girlsâ on the drive over. when i finished my set, a friend asked about the drum machine in one song and i said i took a cue from ferry and he recommended his 2010 record âolympiaâ which i somehow had never heard and now iâm currently obsessed with it. when i was packing up my gear the dj just put on another track of his. the next day at work, to sustain my post-show high i put on roxy music, and a customer i usually never talk to wound up sticking around telling me how much they love him. anyways i love that heâs kind of my spirit guide following me around at the moment and highly recommend doing a deep dive into his world if you havenât done so alreadyâŚ
