Samurai Week getting even better. as much as I enjoyed Seven Samurai, I enjoyed this one considerably more.
A masterless samurai arrives at the palace of a daimyo requesting use of the courtyard to commit harakiri, the rite of ritual disembowelment. suspecting that he is just looking for sympathy or employment, the samurai engage him in a deep exploration of the values, intentions, and code of himself and of the samurai as a way of life.
Genuinely some of the most beautiful and masterful storytelling I’ve ever seen put to film. I was captivated every single second. The writing is excellent and the story is so compelling. The structure is perfect. a beautiful exploration of the honor culture of feudal Japan and what it leads to. Such a deeply human story. Five stars
