Not familiar with the rest of their catalog but really enjoying Touché Amoré's 2024 album Spiral in a Straight Line. Really cathartic post-hardcore with some neat quippy lyrics. Vocals all across this album are just dramatic and raw and angry enough to ground the songwriting. Good shit.

Touche Amore, a LA post-hardcore band, released an amazing new record this past month. This record is already high up on my list for AOTY 2020. I thought it would be nearly impossible to top 2016’s Stage Four, but Touche may have done it. This album has pop-punk bangers, emotional heartache, and makes me feel alive.

this is the debut from canadian emo band Arms Length. an absolute modern masterpiece for emo music. the lyrics on this thing are tortured, dealing with themes of memory, family, loss, and isolation. compositionally i love it. tasteful strings and twinkling riffs over heavy blasts of sound. and speaking of sound, it’s mixed and mastered beautifully. every listen gives me something new to chew on. personally, this one also got me through the roughest period in my adult life. i heard them for the first time live when they were opening for heart attack man right before this album came out. i was absolutely floored by their performance. something about this band breathed life into me and god that’s what i love so much abt music :) my fave songs on it are formative age and everything as i knew it. tough love is a fuckin banger too

A friend of mine recommended this band semi-recently. Was taken aback immediately and have been listening to a bunch of their early catalogue. Hard to beat the creativity of it all, especially in contrast with the rest of the self-seriousness that seeps into the cracks of anything cool.

Composing a short film about childhood at the moment and I’ve been leaning heavily on this Casio PT-1 keyboard I picked up at a flea market in Barcelona. They were manufactured starting in 1985 as a simpler alternative to Casio’s LV-1, hailed to be the first commercially available synth. Anyway love this sound it’s so tactile without feeling too boxy, I’ve really enjoyed playing it through my Tascam 414 as a preamp.

Alright here’s a quick look at hand processing 16mm motion picture film. The stock I shot for this film is called Kodak 3378, it’s a high contrast black and white reversal film stock, which basically means it doesn’t develop as a negative but as the actual viewable image. The process of “hand development” is an interesting one. First 100 ft of film are loaded into a light proof tank. The chemical process I used is called E6 and it consists of a few steps that can be performed at room temperature: first developer, second developer, rinse, bleach, fixer, photoflow. Exposing the film to these chemicals four particular times results in the final image. This step is the rinse, the 3378 stock is the slightly purple film. Hand processing creates strange patterns and aberrations, disturbances created by a process that is inherently imperfect. It allows the artist to play with the parameters of 16mm image making but maybe more importantly, its results are a direct effect of the artist’s hand on their work. This is why we shoot film in a digital world: it’s something we can physically affect as true human beings.
