There are lots of tropical flowers that I love but for now I want to pick a flower native to where I grew up. This is a legally protected flower in BC, meaning it’s illegal to dig up wild trilliums or pick their flowers. This is because it can take between 7-15 years to flower, and if picked, it dies and has to start from scratch. Aside from its distinct three-petal appearance, what I like about trilliums is that they grow in the forest, often with no other flowers in sight. So when you come across one on an hike, often with just a single flower or very small cluster, it’s always so striking. Photo: Tom Kogut
