generative text is not your friend. it's a toy with high costs (to society, to your mind, to the environment) and higher still to come. link is an article from 1/15/25 about a woman in love with a ChatGPT construct.

Ummm so. I wrote about how it feels to get close to someone new for the first time and wanting them to know everything about you and your history and truly GET you and kind of merge with you to create something new together — except this time it's not a human it's CHAT GPT!!! anyway if you think you would like this plus some musings on like, what Chat's capabilities are and how close it is to being human then maybe you should read my substack post.

I fully believe that the AI chatbots are very intentionally being pushed as an educational/social/creative “tool” to make people less able to have creative and critical thought. if we put all of that energy into something as convenient as chatgpt, whether it’s to help write an essay or use as a “therapist,” we think we’re satiating that human urge to be creative. Creativity is at its most powerful when people can pull from the discomfort and inspiration of the human experience, which can lead to critiques towards the oligarchs running the country right now. convenience will always win people over when they’re exhausted from working in this late stage of capitalism. Also, it would be incredibly easy to inject the bots with propaganda and misinformation.

I know people are going to be using it a lot maybe for dumb menial stuff, but I have not had a moment where it felt compellingly as though it was going to “take over”. Everybody I’ve seen who has made that argument is somehow relying on it to be true, so I can’t trust them. I immediately judge anybody who tells me they use chatGPT for something related to their work. And I don’t think I’m being unfair. At best, something like chatGPT is a tool that people can use for brainstorming, but directly using chatGPT output is just pathetic to me. I dunno.

I feel like 12 is a wonderful place to start. 1 book a month. Keep it in your bathroom. Beside your bed. Where you eat your meals. Please read this year. It's one of the best things you can do for yourself. and for me, and for everyone who you'll tell, I'm reading again, and you should read with me too. Take pictures or screencaps of passages and send them to your friends. Read funny, easy books, evil and upsetting books, books that are boring but are still satisfying to finish. Go to the library. Challenge yourself. You will feel better, you'll feel proud of yourself, and you'll banish the negative moodlet of being mad or ashamed at yourself for not reading. It's ok that you haven't been. You had your reasons and it doesn't do any good to beat up on yourself. That was then and this was now. Start a book tomorrow bc it is a new day :)

I don't listen to any AI generated playlists because I prefer to hear ones curated by people. I love sharing music as a human to human thing. It's also dismaying how music streaming services prioritize the songs of artists whose management pay them, etc. It's so fun to simply browse anonymous person's curated lists instead on top of sharing with friends. It's never been easier to peek into someone else's semi-private music preference and walk their landscape. Just today I found a person who's made dozens of playlists for specific beanie babies (!), all with no saves or likes. We don't need AI driven sorting to develop taste and find things we like. Break out of the corral with me and run free. Let's see what's over the hill
