I love digital photography, but I love love love being able to hold on to my physical photos.

Collections of digital photos are more ephemeral than we think. I make it a point to periodically order prints of my favorite photos from each year. The material stuff doesnât last forever either, but unless youâre a fastidious digital archivist, the physical may stick around longer. As someone whoâs witnessed the slow death of a couple of social media websites and personal computers, those photos of friends, family or a building you liked the look of in 2015 often land in the internet graveyard. Thereâs an inherent value to the tangible and the touchable. The fact that I still have photos of my mom as a teenager astounds me.

i found a box of my parentâs photos from when they first started dating to their wedding and around when i was born and made me realize:
1. there is so much more life to live!! and i hope i can look back on my 20âs with the same fondness they do
2. how nice it is to have physical photos - i never go through my camera roll but i love revisiting old journals or scrapbooks and i think printing photos would have the same effect. i find that the phone camera effect almost makes taking pictures feel more disposable or practical rather than artistic (for me personally, ik a lot of people who have really nice camera rolls on their phones) so maybe getting a camera or just thinking about memory capture differently would aim me in this direction

Rant incoming: we need to place more value on printed photography rather than treating photographs merely as objects of our brief attention. I can physically feel a need for this. A real object of memory that we can hold and keep and watch fade. A piece of art on your wall to look at every day that reminds you of another time, a place youâve been, a person youâve been, how you felt. Iâm so glad that film photography still exists, and that people actually care here. It scares me to think that it might not one day, and that my kids might not be able to experience the pure joy and magic of shooting film.
It also scares me to look at photographyâs place in the commercial art world, and how devalued it is in the past couple years. I know a big reason for this is obviously that they can be reproduced, but I also think a lot of people donât see the value in photography anymore. after IG became a mall. we should all be buying prints. If everyone was buying prints, the economy would probably be way better and then the film industry would be saved and photographers could live â€ïž

One more thing: the minute i started thinking about photography less like journaism and more like painting i felt so much better about everything. it just made sense finally. Idk how to explain it. It doesnt have to be fast. it doesnât even have to make sense.
