I use it to memorize poems, learn vocabulary, and store other information that doesnāt always need to stay in my brain.
When Iām on the train or waiting, I try to read in my commonplace book instead of looking at my phone.

So I always have some way to remember a quote or interesting fact I encounter when Iām out. Also, fun to sit on the train and try to memorize poems and quotes. Iāve banked a few away this way.

I gave up social media for Lent and got annoyed whenever I had to reactivate the first few weeks because I wanted to copy out a recipe, the name of a painting I forgot, a book a friend had suggested, etc. When I was on the bus a few weeks later, I reread Elisa Gabbertās essay āNotes on Keeping a Notebook,ā which outlines her own experiences with a commonplace book / the utility and beauty of writing down small details. I started using a little goatskin-bound one I bought online a few years ago and havenāt looked back since. I never leave the house without it and spend more time leafing through that than checking for texts when Iām out & about now.

I carry around this tiny notebook everywhere I go and just write down any thought worth remembering. Itās helping me stay off my phone.
There are pages full of what wouldāve been tweets when I was more chronically online.Theres a lot of quotes from books Iām reading or substack articles. Sometimes itās just lists of tasks like āremember to refill prescriptionā.
