The way that the ancient Greeks and Romans recreated the flowy and semi-transparent tunics in their art always amazes me. Part of why I love classical museums is because their art is legitimately beautiful, even when you take away the gravity of how old they are. And art incorporating their clothing especially stands out to me.
The Pompeii excavation just showed off some new frescoes themed around the cult of Dionysus today, and this one caught my eye. I’ve been constantly staring at it as I wonder how the artist from 2 millenia ago managed to subtly mix in colours to achieve the look of the dress being semi-transparent. It’s clever and gorgeous, I’m glad that we have the opportunity to admire their art so long after creation.
