whenever i visited my serbian grandparents I had the best time making my favorite food gibanica with my nana. its a cheesy eggy bake with phyllo dough and the process involves a lot of sticking your hands into cheese mush and making pockets with the phyllo dough. it was a messy sensory delight and still some of my fondest memories. the smell of roasted red peppers brings me back to their old house immediately.
on my southern side, chicken and dumplins was a staple my grandfather had been making for many many decades. the smell of bacon brings me back to his house. Despite being from very different parts of the world, it was very cute how my serbian deda and southern grandpa would bond over their mutual love of pork products (particularly head cheese) despite a slight language barrier.
