sincerely surprised at how well received this was/still is and genuinely disappointed when I actually watched it. So clearly written for a white audience with little to no concept of intersectionality and a pretty individualistic, college/101 intro-to, perspective of feminism? Heavily reflected in how painfully flat the plot played out tho they did their best to cover that with cloying sets/costumes, claiming its camp when its just a big budget and lacklustre writing. Lot of direct slaps in the face to native viewers and other communities im sure; its a pretty laborious watch otherwise id give a more detailed dive

the way so many people were talking about it i thought it was like radical and transformative… and it’s actually depressing that a celeb-filled silly comedy interspersed with very basic feminist ideas was received that way. i thought it had some redeemable aspects when i watched it but as i saw read more stuff about it (both positive and negative) have continually realized it is more problematic than not. in part because it has convinced a lot of people (i feel) that that is what feminism is

can we say it's bad? yes we can and we should. pls that misogynistic crap being treated like revolutionary feminism is so revolting. even though i get the resemblance with the discourse on female standards being higher and how hollywood exploits women (and bodies) but this is not the answer you think it's so innovative to the problem

this is so dumb. like sooo so dumb. like who cares. i'm aware. but like there was genuine potential to do something interesting here and it was just completely shirked in favor of the strangest nat geo special i have ever seen i was thinking about this especially after watching "black is king"; both it & the gift (both super underappreciated by the by, go listen/watch if u haven't recently they have no business being this good attached to something as silly as a live action disney remake) essentially being concept albums and films based on the original lion king. like, imagine that but in like a full proper film context like the whole reason why the musical version is still so loved all these years later is down to its creative interpretation. you're really telling me they couldn't just do that but in a new context, for a new generation? like can you IMAGINE the wardrobe? the choreography? letting chiwetel ejiofor actually do be prepared like a full musical number??? all of that, squandered!! like are we ALLERGIC to fun and creativity!?!??! (maybe i'm just a bit bitter we didn't get beyoncé's rendition of shadowland liKE COME TF ON IT'S LITERALLY PERFECTLY IN HER RANGE)

"separating the art from the artist" is a privileged ass take and doesn't exist. what people create is representative of how theyve interacted with the world thus far. what the world has done to them, what others have done to them, what theyve learned from others, what theyve done to others, how theyve navigated life with what theyve been given or with what theyve taken. if you deny that the nude portraits drawn by the hand of a sexual predator are a bastardised version of reality based on his perspective and experience of violence against women then you would also deny the experience of indigenous artists in their depictions of brutality in the face of colonialism or that a single stroke in a painting created by a Black artist holds the weight of going through life in america while being black. when consuming art, media, anything created by human hands/minds you must also be conscious of the creators lived experience, wether its negative or positive, if you want to make an accurate assessment on the art itself dont live and consume in ignorance
