Indigenous peoples of so-called-USA used this planting practice… and it comes with a story! There were 3 sisters who were always fighting. The mother warned them, and told them to work together or they would face the consequences. The youngest sister was the squash, she learned she could help her sisters by covering the ground, and protecting the soil from weeds. The middle sister was the beans, who was planted to help bring nitrogen to the soil for her sisters. And the eldest sister was corn, who acted as a support for her middle sister. The beans climb up the corn stalks as support. Using indigenous practices & watching nature work together is so beautiful 🤍🥹

has taught me so much about like…faith and patience...& while caring for/harvesting plants, flowers and veggies has its own gradient of reward, this cursory lesson still hits every time imo. If you have access to even a friend‘s garden or somewhere to sow something you can check back in/care for I recommend it. Not exactly one of those ‘your garden is a revolutionary act’ types, but I do believe that there is a lot on offer in growing anything, starting with the alchemical-feeling activity of sprouting 1 seed into plant.

I put a bunch of perennial seedlings in the ground last week and then we ended up getting a couple inches of snow and I was so sad thinking they’d be goners - but I checked on them today and they’re completely fine!! Picking plants that are adapted to your environment will never steer you wrong <3 (Pictured are Thermopsis and Cleome seedlings growing in front of some flowering Linum lewisii we put in last year)
