dude has a pretty solid lineup spanning a wide spread of genres, all executed flawlessly, and he writes, records, produces, and mixes everything Silver Wilkinson (2013): spacious, almost ambient guitar ballads, all washed with reverb and decorated with field recordings. fav songs: Raincoat, You Won’t Remember…, Dye The Water Green, a tout a l’heure A Mineral Love (2016): a few songs are in a similar vein as the last album, this time a bit crisper and with the addition of some electronic elements. some moments are more funk/soul inspired. love the drum machines and clavs. fav songs: Town & Country, Feeling, Petals, Raxeira, C’est La Vie Phantom Brickworks (2017): the biggest switchup, a loop based ambient album interspersed with field recordings and samples, reminiscent of William Basinski, a concept album on the dilapidated ruins of the early industrial era that litter the Welsh countryside. also has a companion EP of Phantom Brickworks IV-V fav songs: Capel Bethania, Phantom Brickworks I-III Ribbons (2019): Bibio takes his usual guitar balladry but with a Welsh folk twist, all the songs are full of nature imagery. dude busts out the mandolin and fiddle on a few tracks fav songs: Curls, Beret Girl, Ode to a Nuthatch, Valley Wulf, Old Graffiti Sleep on the Wing (2020): FULL WELSH FOLK MODE. perfect morning music, lovely melodies and lush arrangements. dude plays all the parts too. fav songs: Oakmoss, Sleep on the Wing, Watching Thus the Heron is all Pool, Awpockes BIB10 (2022): his 10th album, more of a 80s pop vibe, sounds kinda like Prince. a lot synthier and groovier fav songs: Even More Excuses, Rain and Shine, S.O.L, Fools, Cinnamon Cinematic Sunbursting (2023): YACHT ROCK. steely dan vibes on this. fav songs: Sorry Won’t Cut It, A Matter of Fact, All of the Above, Sunbursting

CAMERON WINTER - HEAVY METAL

December is such a tragically dead month for new releases that it’s a rare gift to get an album this fucking good this late in the year. My friend Marcos sent me a link to Heavy Metal out of the blue a few days after it was released – I don’t always listen to what he sends me, and he knows that, but I’m so glad I went into this with a clear mind and open heart. It’s been ages since a first listen of an album hit me this hard. Lyrically Heavy Metal feels like what I always wanted from Dan Bejar but never quite got, and musically it almost feels like John Cale tried to rerecord Paris 1919 from memory with a single microphone and a cracked Ableton rip. Or something like that? Mostly, it feels like a wholly original statement that can’t be contained, like someone finally letting go of any inhibition and confessing every private insecurity without fear. His lyrics teeter from darkly hilarious (“like Brian Jones I was born to swim”) to bizarrely visceral romanticism (“you were born to break my big hairy football arms/like clean windows kill birds”) while regularly returning to the ultimate questions life has to offer: love, desire, purpose, God, you name it. It’s self deprecating without being self indulgent and immensely wise without ever feeling like an intellectual exercise. It’s an album that feels like too rich of a body of work to even properly engage with on the first several listens. Winter’s emotionality is so deep, so personal and so bizarre that it becomes universal – so relatable yet so exaggerated and disjointed that it borders on psychological horror. I’m going to be picking up on new things within these songs for a long time to come, and I suspect this album will stand out to me as one of the absolute best when I look back at the year.

Smog

Not sure if this is a normal arc for aging hipsters but recently oddball indie country has really been clicking in a way it never did before and Bill Callahan’s work as Smog is just amazing. His baritone voice really sells the poetic tales of self-loathing. Hell the entire album Knock Knock is about fumbling Chan Marshall (Cat Power) and if that’s not a relatable vibe I don’t know what is Album picks: Red Apple Falls, Dongs of Sevotion, Knock Knock, A River Ain’t Too Much to Love, Supper

Perspective

I know this app is still pretty small in comparison to other social media apps. However it’s important to remember that everyone here is REAL. “Dead Internet Theory” and related concepts really come into light when you use something like PI and notice that there’s no spam, no bots, no advertising, and no one clawing for likes and to be picked by the algo. THIS is the internet. This is what it’s supposed to look and feel like. I hope it lasts.
