It changed my loife by freeing me from the shackles of my hormonal cycle (and fear of pregnancy) with no side effects and no medication management required… I used to have HORRIFIC debilitating periods and it’s not something I have to live with or even think about anymore. I’m dreading getting mine replaced because my first insertion was kind of a nightmare but it was worth it!! And I’m hoping for a better experience this time around with a different provider šŸ¤ž

i will say i had one placed and had lidocaine before hand and then one with out any meds (i think i had a Tylenol?) and it wasn’t really as bad as people say it was. the tough part about insertion IMO is that it takes a while to heal like i cramped and bled for what felt like forever but 3 months later and it feels normal ish now! it sucks but sooooooooooooo worth it SO worth it

I love my mirena so much I got a second on after it was time to remove my first ! Replacement was easy — three Advil thirty mins before and a lot of deep breathing/breathing exercises.

Why did I kind of like the way it felt when they dilated my cervix before insertion šŸ™Š

@RAINEDAY LOLLL I think I would have done so fine actually if they hadn’t used a huge ass numbing needle on my cervix beforehand that was the awful part for me šŸ’€

Just as a caveat to anyone considering this, I had a diff IUD for 6 years and then switched to Mirena and it turned me into a complete psycho and I had to get that shit ripped tf out so these things effect every person differently! I’m glad it worked for you tho!

in the US, the FDA (regulates lots of things incl birth control) largely stopped approving new IUDs after one brand of IUD in the 70s caused severe medical problems in a lot of women. that didn’t change as medicine continued to modernize, and today there are only 6 brands of IUDs avail - ONE was approved this year (shockingly) and was the first copper one approved in 40 years (one of two copper IUDs you can get here). one major downside of how the FDA has handled things is that the IUDs in the US are unfortunately very big and all have the T-shape - in other countries, there are much smaller IUDs. for people w tilted or small uteruses or who haven’t been pregnant, the chance of having a painful IUD insertion or complication due to size is a bit higher. so in a lot of other countries, in particular Europe where IUDs are much more popular than in the US, there are typically more IUD options and the options include smaller or easier shapes.

science and medicine has progressed enough to the point where women can opt to stop having periods. i’ve had two hormonal IUDs over the course of 8 years now, and therefore haven’t had a period in 8 years. no cramps. no heating pads. no cravings. no tampons. nothing. every womens body is different and i can’t promise everyone will have the same experience ive had with my IUDs. but if your periods suck like mine did, it can’t hurt to ask a doctor ab going on some sort of HRT/birth control. why are we still letting our uteruses dictate and manage our lives for one week out of every month? (for some, like myself at one point, well over just one week) not having a period is great! it’s freeing!!!!! i feel as if i can put my personhood and identity first, and not sacrifice any sort of happiness or autonomy to my uterus!

for years i tried to find relief until i just couldn’t take it anymore and went to the gyno looking for answers. they put me on a birth control patch that i change once a week with one week having no patch (and then comes the period that week) and itā€˜s like night and day. my period’s a little longer but the pain is almost completely gone and my PMS symptoms are almost nonexistent. i’m so happy with it so i definitely recommend!!

hello newcomer of PI! Dw about the heavy posting, we are real people with real problems for real. I personally stopped taking bc after being on it mostly of my early twenties. it became weak against my growing body, and it effected me in ways I didn’t process at the time. Extremely low mood, breaking out, spotting early and backaches. Instead of thinking of bc as the problem that you need to solve, what if you thought of other alternatives? looking into IUDs for example? Or finding a physician specific for your needs, perhaps someone who identifies as a woman? honestly, TikTok is a crazy good resource for this kind of stuff too. Given that sex is in line with being a source of income, your fears around removing birth control are completely valid. If you are in a position to, perhaps take a week off from working and birth control at the same time, to let yourself make a decision. Obvs, birth control effects (even the removal of it) takes around a month to feel, but hey, it could work in deciding what works for you!! I wish you the best, and hope that this transition is easy for your mind, body & soul!

ā€œLife shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage.ā€ — AnaĆÆs Nin This is uncharacteristically raw and personal, even for me, and pretty heavy! I know many of you have seen me posting through it and I feel safe to talk about it openly now that I’ve safely landed at the start of my new life. It’s honestly even a little bit embarrassing but I think it’s important to share. I’ve never publicly mentioned it on here, but I have a husband; as of Friday, we’d have been together for 11 years, and we’ve been married for 3 years as of 2/22. I realize now that I wanted to explore what I looked like outside of my relationship with him because I had lost that. This is why PI.FYI has been so meaningful to me as a space to express myself and connect with people—to rediscover my voice. I had been living a lie this entire time, to others but worst of all to myself. He’s been verbally and emotionally abusive, physically but without touching me, to the point that every day I spent with him I was in danger. I’ve been shrinking myself and walking on eggshells to avoid making him insecure and provoking his casual put-downs and fits of rage, while hanging on for dear life to the threads of good I could see. I’ve wanted so badly to leave, more than anything, but I felt like there was no way out and that this was just something I would need to endure indefinitely—but someone who is so very dear to me helped me see that I have wings to fly, not by acting as my savior but by reminding me of my own power. The emotional safety they built and the gentle care they showed me made me feel like I could open up to them. With their encouragement I was brave enough to tell the truth to my friends, my family, my boss, and they have received me with warm, loving and open arms and rallied to support and protect me. The financial andĀ  logistical aspects were the most intimidating to me and it’s going to be tough for a while but I’m going to be better than okay! Now I’m opening up to you. This isn’t the only abuse I’ve suffered in my life, and my old therapist told me she believed it was my mission to share my strength and light with others to inspire them and show them that change is possible. I hope that by sharing this, I can reach even just one person who is going through something similar and show that they are not alone, and they are not weak. People with certain backgrounds may be more vulnerable to abuse, but it can happen to anyone. It thrives in darkness, shame, and isolation—and breaking that silence is the first step toward freedom. Leaving is the scariest thing I have ever done but I have so many angels around me, and I am endlessly grateful. Thank you for being here with me šŸ’Œ

My dad teases me about how when I was a little kid, my favorite thing to do when I was on the landline phone with somebody—be it a relative or one of my best friends—was to breathlessly describe the things that were in my bedroom so that they could have a mental picture of everything I loved and chose to surround myself with, and where I sat at that moment in time. Perfectly Imperfect reminds me of that so thanks for always listening and for sharing with me too šŸ’Œ
