I think she makes objectively bad pop music with simple-minded and often narcissistic lyrics. I don’t have a problem with Swifties who are children or casual listeners for nostalgia’s sake, but I am infuriated by grown adults who close themselves off to any other artistic expression to focus all their energy on idol worship of a performer who is so mediocre in vocals, stage presence, and songwriting. There are so so many female artists who are more genuine, talented, captivating, and more deserving of praise and listenership than her that it actually astounds me. It feels like I’m stuck in a buffet with a million offerings and instead of getting some delicious, fresh, local meal crafted by a chef with years of experience and real passion for what they do, everyone is lined up at the one station that serves day-old IHOP pancakes and lukewarm Wawa coffee creamer.

if you appreciate it for what it is, the music is good. but i agree it's like she's become popular because of the most bizarre, insane, (sorry) demonic reasons. the severity of parasocial relations her fans have with her, her haters have with gosh the entire world which is forced a constant report of her life its just so odd?? her last two albums have had no sonic or musical merit besides surface level rhymes and metaphors which just reveal her diary. and the speed at which she produces them!! on such an intense tour and she made like thirty songs! how long did she spend on each song ? i don't really trust teh artistic intent of someone who works that hard, sorry i don't. hard work is a manifestiaion of deeper psychological issues. like sally rooney wrote in beautiful world, where are you why would anyone want to be famous? why are our lives rules by people who want that, why are they our idols? at one points in time the best artists weren't corporate girlbosses they were just very good at art. her music is fine im sure she, like any person, is nice. it'sm the whole swift machine he brand the desert of teh real or whatever, the whole music industry i is just so deeply anti-social and indicative of wider social contortions.

I’m glad someone else agrees with me on this subject. The mediocrity of it all!

idk sometimes you just want diner coffee and she is the epitome of that, I see your take a lot and I love a lot of other artists too but Taylor Swift is so pop she's stayed in my rotation. sometimes I just don't want depth I just want a catchy formula and she does have that down.

@MOONBEAMS I’m not on any other social media than PI so I didnt know the tide had turned that much on her tbh and have never really seen this take online or in my real life aside from my friends i already know are haters lmao. I work with swifties and also see endless streams of young bachelorette parties with TS themed merch. other than IRL interactions I see what’s popular in the world based on my youtube shorts scrolling (which i’m sure is largely children lmao) and get videos of people (again, probably children) worshipping TS for doing the most mundane things. to clarify, I don’t think you have any less depth or taste than me because you like her, I have my own guilty pleasure/cringe enjoyment (for example, I feel like I’m one of the only people on this app with literal hundreds of hours poured into playing super smash bros ultimate which is cringe in its own right) its more so resentment at people writing off anything even slightly experimental as weird or annoying or grating in contrast to TS based on experiences I’ve had with people in my life or my small corners of the internet. This has made me resentful of TS and her influence over time. PI is one of the brighter corners of the internet so I really don’t want to make anyone feel belittled or lame because of my takes and I want you to know I very much respect your opinion even if I disagree with it! 🕊️

@WORLDONFIRE hey yeah the only reason I commented was because I know you didn't mean any disrespect and I was curious and knew I could ask, because this is PI. I respect your take too obviously! But that makes so so much sense. The idol worship can definitely be crazy with her fans. I don't think any celebrity deserves blind loyalty and she definitely has a lot of it, and people not having on open mind to other things is frustrating for sure. Thank you for explaining, I don't actually disagree with anything you pointed out :))

@DELICATEWILLOW and yet she is lauded as a poet with immeasurable depth. Yeah, she has haters. She's also a billionaire with a fanbase that treats her like a god who can do no wrong. She's overhyped for how mediocre her songwriting is.

@MOTLEYSHREW You can be two things at once. She gets an INSANE amount of hate while also being rich and famous, you are not wrong

@DELICATEWILLOW I would argue that it's not "insane" amounts of hate, but perhaps the hate she gets is largely due to her fan base. Most people can't mention their (valid) issues with her without the pearl-clutching "how dare you insult our queen" reaction. Which kind of just makes people hate harder, because honestly, she simply hasn't done enough to be worthy of such idolatry.

@26GIRLS i’m truly an old head hater. i saw her debut a song on CMT unplugged in 2006 and my entire family was baffled as to how she got airtime because she was just that bad at singing

i agree, so much it seems like the more manufactured and soulless music becomes, the more people obsess over it to unhealthy degrees and never branch out. also it just sounds bad so i don’t get it

Growing up, I was the biggest Swiftie ever. Hollywood stars was all I ever talked about at the dinner table, because their art could replace friends I lost as I grew up. They were always thought of as bigger than me, a shining example of the best a human being can be. But now that I'm older and looking at Hollywood I don't see the light. I see truths I have to keep quiet about. So my advice is to stop even joking that people like Billie Eilish are Gods. If you want someone like that, turn to Jesus, like I did. Hollywood is dead.

The first time I saw them live was in a Best Buy right after they were on The X-Factor. I continued to attend their shows until they broke up and was obsessed with them for the entirety of my pre-teen girlhood. Recently I recalled that they were one of the few pop artists at the time who sang about something other than love. A lot of it was about independence and empowering fems. That was really important for us at the time.
