Just because I see a window to get across the street doesn’t mean you don’t have to look both ways. I’ve been on the other side of that though…

Was walking in midtown the other day and doing my normal hustle bustle, dodging and racing around all the tourists and I have a habit of quickly stepping into the street to get around a slow poke. Wasn‘t paying attention to the street and a massive commuter bus came screaming down the road, maybe 3 feet from me in the lane closest to the sidewalk. Thankfully I was still on the sidewalk. But that bus was so big and so fast and so quiet until it wasn’t. I’ve had flashbacks to that the last couple days and I have to suppress the panic. folks, keep your head about you. Pay attention. Nothing is worth saving a few minutes and rushing around.

listen carefully when i tell you this.. you have the right of way in just about every situation. it is the car driver's responsibility to not hit people. now i'm not condoning jumping into traffic here. you should still make responsible decisions as a pedestrian. BUT you must feel empowered to exercise your right of way. is a car trying to roll thru a stop sign while you're crossing and attempting to cut you off? keep walking. get in their way and make them slow down. look directly at them thru the windshield. mouth (or shout) the words "thank you" and smile at them without breaking eye contact and without breaking your stride. bonus points for slowing down your pace and making them wait even longer. this is my daily retaliation against car-centric infrastructure. make them think, at least for one single moment, about their mistake and remind them that roads are for people before they are for cars. always.

I met Erin (@RIOTGRRRL) and Jake (@SLOWDAZZLE) last year after I started using PI.FYI—we organized a meetup before a Jonathan Richman show and immediately clicked over our shared taste in music and similar sensibilities. We started hanging out a lot and had some great times together. I’ve also gotten to know many of their friends, who are all really cool. Erin and Jake started dating a couple of months after the three of us became friends, but our group chat still pops off. Their friendship has meant a lot to me, especially since moving to NYC in 2023, and I really appreciate having them in my life.

Its a web app that people submit 1 song per week and then everyone gets to vote on the all the different songs but their own. After all the rounds have been completed, the person with the most votes wins! Its a fun way to share music with people and get competitive. Been using this app with other online communities and friends for a few months and have really been enjoying it. NOTE: I created a PI.FYI League where the first submission is this friday. I limited it to 25 people for now not sure if I should open that up to more but it would be pretty overwhelming to have more than 25 songs to listen and vote on. The join link is attached to this rec!
