Keeping a direct line open to one’s ancestors is I think a very effective way of not falling off the face of our earth. This could be facilitated by a piece of family jewelry or a photo/painting of/belonging to an ancient in your line. Warning sometimes these objects can get a bit charged and you gotta maybe light a candle and open a window and be like I know, I’m listening, thank you. For me remembering that I am a small sapling from many redwoods helps me feel looked out for and like if i take a big swing and miss they will still love me.

if i think too hard about the pounamu that has been around my neck, my mother‘s and her mother’s…. i could burst into tears. i often wonder how many times they’ve touched it in the same way i do - to find comfort in panicky times or feel a little bit closer to my family when im far away.

i always envied those who are familiar with their ancestry and they have family relics or something they can physically connect to via: touch, vision etc. the only thing i can connect with are icons but i am not religious and although i like understanding what they believe(d) in but it is still too overwhelming and too formal in a sense for me

I keep the necklace my grandfather gave me when I was born on me at all times to feel close to him, and to remind me where I come from. He was the large vein of Emerald that I was pickaxed from (We are Colombian, and Emeralds are a huge export)

e.g. to find ideal parking (growing up, my great uncle would score "rock star parking" no matter where we went.) Call upon them sparingly, and be sure to acknowledge when they've aided you. Thanks Uncle Paul !

I always take the winding two lane mountain road home from work, it’s 8 minutes longer and so much prettier than the interstate. I see longhorn cows, sheep, goats, fluorescent red sugar maples. Yesterday I took a trip to visit my grandmothers grave with my mother and my 101 year old grandpa. Over a century later, he still remembers every old road and scenic back way to get around, who lived in what house, where they worked, who were friends, enemies, and lovers. He told me stories about every nook and cranny in that tiny town nestled among the Blue Ridge. Building the church on the corner of the graveyard and using popcorn in the mortar which got so hot it popped. Exploring the flour mill with his friends which today is a miniature museum of the town history. How he and his fellow boy scouts used buckets and shovels to help fight the raging fire that spread across the mountain range. He showed me the railroad his father was a pipefitter on and the few blocks he walked to work, the corner their little dog would wait dutifully for his whistle to come running after hearing the work bell every evening. He sang me the song about catfish they used to sing while bathing in the calm river in the summer months, the same river that claimed the life of his brother in law. I miss the city and our friends, but I know we have so much time to make our own stories in the decades to come. I feel so blessed that I have him in my life and to be living again in my hometown to hear these stories and so many others. I am so grateful that he gets to spend time with my husband and celebrate the joining of our families. If you’re lucky enough to have a grandparent or any elder in your life, give them a call or pay them a visit and let them tell you stories, even the ones you’ve heard before. Ask questions about what it was like when they were your age and tell them how much you love them.

Are you taking fruit for granted? I was. Orbs of sweetness and vitality that come in their own wrapper and can be enjoyed wherever. I highly recommend eating fruit in bed with someone you’re kissing. Naked maybe. It’s sexy

We’re conditioned now to try grab it all and grow without limit and it’s making us feel sick. Let something of value pass you by this week. Even better if it feels wrong to do so/presses into an uncomfy spot. See if the feeling you’re craving can be achieved using tools you have. It’s extremely honourable to operate one beloved restaurant and never open any more, success doesn’t have to mean becoming shake shack (although I do like shake shack).

I started doing this in a period when I was experiencing deep confusion about who I was. I found being in a hat or sweatshirt with some signifiers specific to me or an idea I wanted to live by that day pinned me down and pumped me up. I use Jonathan Embroidery Plus in the garment district but most malls have a stand that offers this service. Embroidery is expensive but I think cements the idea best.
