There’s nothing I long for more than placing a microphone near the river or the sea, recording nothing but the voice of water — unfiltered, unspoken, just present. That’s what Ramparts feels like to me. As if someone recorded silence with strings. It has something of a medieval tone — delicate, haunting, ancient — and it pierces in the exact places where I’m most human. It doesn’t shout, it doesn’t rush. It simply is, and it reaches me. The album title, To Record Only Water for Ten Days, feels like a mantra. I love it — so natural, so quiet, so true.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the album ‘To Record Only Water For Ten Days’. Surprisingly the album has some really great electronic / guitar crossover music and is not just recordings of water. John recorded this around the time he was recording Californication. This was my introductory album to John’s eclectic catalog after hearing the song ‘Murderers’ in a skate video.

One of my favorite songs off of John’s debut solo record recorded during the time of Blood Sugar sex Magic. Mind bending recording techniques on a Tascam 4 track cassette recorder. This is the song I usually show beginners and see how weird they want to get, if they don’t like this song I go more towards the electronic/pop leaning albums.

With vocal accompaniment from Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins this hypnotic and cascading track seems to capture you in a daydream.
