I love watching this video every once and a while to remember how incredibly talented people can be.Traditional sign making/painting is almost a lost craft, and is one of the most impressive forms of art to me.

i'm trying to make myself smarter and my paintings better, so i've been staying up lateāuntil i can feel myself falling asleep on the couchāand watching videos of other, way more successful artists talking to public access tv people about their work. growing up my dad always did the same thing, except instead of consuming media about culture or philosophy, he would watch like, ghost adventures, or shows about building cars.
linked is my favorite clip that i've watched recently; an artist with no pretentions and who uses their work to invest in and be a creative catalyst for their local community is something that i strive to be. also, did anybody else here get a BFA and just absolutely love getting assigned to watch one of these videos???

My father is a wood, stone, reclaimed materials, and xeriscape artist and resents that heās subjected to the gaze of an audience if anything. I know with absolute certainty that he would feel compelled to create beautiful things even if he were the last man on earth, even if there were nothing left to build with. itās the way he interfaces with the world! I think thatās very common among the most humble working artists who really do it for their craft and itās why theyāre able to be so prolific. Many of these artists donāt become known until after their deaths, if ever.

Just watched Hank Greenās video about neanderthal art discovered in Spain and I think itās so incredible to imagine people who arenāt homo sapiens making art and even just existing. We feel so superior and unique, but the fact that neanderthal and other species of people used to exist is fucking rad!
