it was referenced in Gilmore Girls so I had to. it’s been on my shelf for a long time tbh but I enjoy Russian lit and the premise is really amusing. deeply satirical and very funny when you can remember all the names.

I love how Gogol uses magical realism and satire to be like "yeah some people are really vain and classist in Russia rn. and some of the men here? yeah, super misogynistic with a fragile masculinity." also, special mentions, White Nights by Dostoevsky and The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde. I love all of these stories for different reasons

the viy - nikolai gogol

I read it today and I'm watching the 1967 movie adaptation right now. very cool and creepy story, definitely reccomend for someone wanting to read something short

The master and margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov

It’s a surrealist satire about the devil visiting Moscow in the 1930s, with a parallel plot set in Jerusalem during the time of Christ. It’s a book I frequently recommend, especially to people who don’t regularly enjoy reading because it’s so captivating and sparkling. It offers a vacation from whatever place or situation you find yourself in for a little while. I missed it whenever I was away from it the entire time I was reading it. The picador edition includes a lot of detail and background info which is a version I would suggest for people not very familiar with Russia and its history and culture.
