I beg of you get to the point. texting is not an instant messenger and I have not committed to a conversation / to being on my phone all day. you have no idea how this text finds me.

Even full ass thoughts and questions can chill. I get yelled at by family and friends fairly often for not responding right away. But I'm old and even when I was young I get distracted / enthralled with things.

@BURN no exactly — text has been treated as IM for far too long and it’s bad for us collectively

changing my framing of text messaging to be more like email than IMing has made it easier to avoid dysfunctional communication like this... respect the other person’s time, don’t expect or depend on immediate responses, that sort of thing

@SLOANE_SHARK it pretty much is an email with less formality!! I’m still open to pebbles like “this song dude” or a meme, and if I’m available we can chat briefly, but “hi,” feels like an invite to chat all goddamn day and I’m not available for that

this may not be in any way applicable to your situations: what if you were to reply letting them know you got the message, you want to connect, but texting just isn't working for you — and instead could they Facetime or do a phone call or something realtime? When I send you a text message or a whatsapp or signal or one of the many others then I am essentially giving you homework/an assignment. I put something in your inbox—on your to do list. Now you have to deal with this thing. My message, or insane flurry of messages, is going to sit there taunting and shaming you. I've been part of so many group messaging threads and they can just become so way too much to point I can't even engage in that medium. So I love the idea of communicating in a way that doesn't put a burden of response on someone—because it is happening in realtime. Instant messaging can be exhausting whereas a phone call or video chat can be life-giving. And when it is over, then it is over.

extend the life of your clothes by covering holes or stains with embroidery floss and yarn while giving them new cool zombie flair! you don’t even have to be neat, the more imperfect the weave the more organic the result. the best mended garments are almost fungal, covered in sick multi-colored lichen.

it’s not bed rotting to rest when you’re tired, run-down, or sick. I can feel where capitalist dogma has seeped into me every time I feel doubt or shame for how much time I’ve spent in bed or doing very little, or the fear that I’ll never be motivated to do anything again. it’s not true! inevitably after only 3 days of solid rest I naturally crave activity, projects, organization, work, and not as penance. rec for rest: screen time of any kind is not the rest I’m talking about… we’re talking rest as a monotask.

my human blood cooler was my dad’s in the 80s when he was on call as a transplant coordinator and had to drive and fly organs all over the place. now it holds mexican lagers at the beach, and that’s my lifeblood.
