I'm true midwestern (central illinois) and always knew fireflies was a term used for them, but irl i ONLY heard lightning bugs. i remember the first time i heard someone irl call them fireflies i was like why are you talking like you're in a movie lol

so much firefly/lightning bug talk lately 😂 I’ve been in md most my life but i used the terms interchangeably. probably after that song is when the “encroaching” began

I think on Long Island NY, older ppl say firefly. but for me as a kid, a lighting bug was when the bug was close by and you could see the bug body, manifest. fireflies were out floating in the dusk
