ok this is a double rec (maybe triple) !!! number one - the movie “how to have sex” a MUBI movie about teenage chavs (am i using that word right) who go to greece for their summer break and what should be the best time of their life, and then :( shit happens. it is a must see beautifully shot. super tender and real
BUT THE SOUNDTRACK?? why was i like i actually love these songs … why am i a 32 year old obsessed w all of these songs and have had them saved since forever - would i be considered cool in europe??
but mostly - i rec having more of a “UK centric” ear - if you don’t know who becky hill is i don’t want to talk to you. one time someone tweeted they hated this pinkpantheress song with this chav (??) rapper because the rap part killed the song. and this other person tweeted back “actually try listening to this with british ears and you’ll get it. i got it the first try”

this was only a top 40 hit in canada & europe/australia i guess but it had 12yo me tearing up for reasons i didn’t understand on the bus to school when it played on the radio (shoutout vibe 98.5fm) . obviously this album had a ton of huge hits but this is the only one that left a deep enough impression on me as a rock loving pre teen to buy the single on itunes for $1.29
runner up is hot by avril lavigne (which was also only a top 40 hit in canada/some parts of europe/australia) . it had me so emotional it really hit something in my core & it still makes me teary eyed today , there’s something in the chorus … *insert the ‘actually top 40 hits were best when i was a teen & they stopped making good music whenever i stopped being that age’ sentiment*

1 of 2 albums I can think of at the top of my mind that I listened to in its entirety. This takes me back to that summer in 2013 when I was listening to this album non-stop along w some indie songs I discovered thru 8tracks (I don’t know if anyone else will know this site, it was a gem). Also it was the time of my life I was just getting to know freedom from being able to travel solo and/or w friends or just discovering life. Akin to a coming-of-age movie. 😅 I don’t know if I make sense.

listen, walks rock. and i don’t care if you are on your smart phone or your little walkman doing your hot girl walk. i think it’s sometimes beautiful and really relaxing to do half of my walks with no music and my phone put away. i tend to notice people more.. their weird annoying mannerisms.. i find more buildings and flowers beautiful and i’m reminded for better or worse i’m not the only one on this earth !

i’m thinking of all those videos on tiktok where someone asks a restaurant owner for food “but i have no money” and then BAM “actually i do have money and here is $1000” in suchhhh a good person. i just saw a girl in manhattan with a “free help” poster sign and my first thought was “oh god where is the camera” and lo and behold there was a full camera crew hiding behind her. do good things for people ! buy that drink on your tab and don’t tell anyone about it. just be nice in silence !

!!! i am so sick of spotify rn. i don’t know if i’ll ever leave spotify - but i feel like, it’s almost impossible for me to discover new music. i could create a classical flute playlist and spotify is like “lets add charli xcx next” - NTS radio has two djs spinning at all times. almost always it’s a hit very seldom is it a miss. sometimes i’m like yeahhh i don’t know if german hardcore rock at 9pm on a tuesday is a move. but it’s where ive found a lot of my recent music. i love this movement of getting away from AI suggestions and allowing humans to choose for me what to listen to
