Ernst Lubitsch perfection. Gutsy and bleak and hilarious.

Ernst Lubitsch, 1933. Erotic. Sucker for movies based on plays, and this one is the best of the best. Polyamory, power exchange, mom stuff. Miriam Hopkins!

I was so incredibly delighted by 'Jewel Robbery' that immediately after, in the span of 3 days, I have watched 4 other films starring these 2 (that being William Powell and Kay Francis) (+ 2 other 1930s comedies of a similar type [yes, I have a lot of free evenings this week lol])! I hope that quickly conveys just how fun a watch this is! How charming the performances, how lovely the costumes, how silly the premise and how wonderfully committed the film is to it! It does exactly what it needs to and dares to do nothing else unnecessary! If you haven't gotten into old movies I think this one might just do the trick! If we're gonna live in a hellscape echo of the 30's we might as well marvel at the movies they made, and get a good dose of empathy for all those who watched this in the theater back then. (S/O to the director btw, who helped people flee Germany!)

It occurs to me... that the posts I most connect with are ones where people unfurl their weirdo habits, values, inner lives (i love the "crush" genre of pi posts), ways of living, likes, dislikes, life philosophical points of view etc. I do treasure proper recs with an object, i.e. a new record or book or 8 hour youtube video, but I find myself really moved when someone shares how they live a good life. appreciating!!

I've been on a real journey lately. You see the person across the room and you know them... and you know they know you... but you know that they aren't going to come over and say hi... do it. Take the plunge. However the approach needs to happen, make contact. Don't wait until you see them at the next networking event and say "hey were you at the taco place the other day?" It's surprisingly empowering and frankly kind of an impressive social maneuver. The reward is giddy and powerful and immediate. It makes me feel like I've broken out of the matrix.
