i’m starting a journey into fantasy with a revisit of a childhood favourite. the gorgeous cover art of which left a permanent gender impression on me as a youth in a way i couldn’t understand until much later. i loved the world & the characters as a kid & so far i’ve been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing & how it all holds up on revisiting.

as i was reminiscing about book of my youth, i uncovered another buried memory. due to growing up poor circumstances, i was constantly getting free books from different programs as a kid. i remember when i was around 13? maybe 14? one of these books i received was ā€œprimaveraā€ by francesca lia block. i think an older lady chose it for me based on the cover alone because i should NOT have been reading this at that age. it was a fantasy which excited me, but i soon realized it dealt with heavy themes and a lot of erotic elements that i didn’t truly understand. but the entire story remains vivid yet distant in my memory. i think i'm gonna take the plunge and read it again 13 years later. i remember the settings and prose being sooo vibrant and beautiful and i wonder if i would have newfound appreciation for it as an adult. i still love the cover and wish i still had my copy. but i think i quickly got rid of it after the big ā€œwhat the fuck?ā€ i felt when i finished it. i def thought my mom would find it and lock me in a dungeon for being a freak bc i slightly enjoyed it even when i was confused.

there is nothing like revisiting the person you used to be and the tastes you used to have! oh to see the world again with the wonder of a 14 year old with a library card.

really beautiful reimagining of children’s mythologies (st nicholas, the tooth fairy, etc.), written & illustrated by William Joyce. the illustrations are beeaaauuttifullll, kinda sci-fi art nouveau. the whole series is kinda like a more maximalist The Little Prince. it’s got magic galore, and fantastic world building, and robots, and flying machines, and fairies, and sentient moonbeams, etc etc the list goes on. it was the inspiration for the Rise of the Guardians movie, but the books have so much more depth & soul to them. they’re definitely a kids series but i can’t think of anything else that more perfectly captures this atmosphere.

it’s the perfect length for me to watch after work , i can start a movie at 11 or even 12 & get to bed at the (mostly) reasonable hour of 1:30 at the latest . sometimes i will extend this to 100 or 110 min if iā€˜m feeling indulgent or ambitious . i could watch an hour of tv but this gives me a whole story in only a little bit more time .
