MUSIC IM LISTENING TO PART 5

i’m discovering so many new songs recently it’s insane- -“She (Rent Free)” by Gabe Rivera this song lives in my head rent free.  Gabe’s an acquaintance of mine and holy shit is his guitar playing and just overall music production skill so good. he’s got a few songs out now and this one sticks out to me cuz i too have someone living in my head rent free and overall it’s just amazing if you like indie rock, go check him out! Gabe Rivera on all platforms! -“Brass Monkey” by Beastie Boys i love how unserious the Beastie Boys are. their music is always so amazing. i randomly remembered this song existed one morning and rolled up to school blasting it-  -“Just a Girl” by No Doubt i am just a girl :) -“Standing By” by Homestyle Dinner Rolls i’ve been following them on Instagram for a while and just now decided to actually listen to their music. this one is such a heartthrob (my favorite kind of music)  -“Ophelia” by The Lumineers this song has been on repeat for the last like 5 hours. i have an unhealthy obsession with it.  there’s something about this song that is just so addicting. i don’t know what it is but i fucking love it

SONGS IM LISTENING TO PART 4

so this is overlapping with part 3 cuz im adding so much new music- “if someone’s gonna love you” by Operelly i got this song off of here! i love this app! and i love this song! soft indie folk like this is amazing. it’s so soothing and intimate and sad all at the same time -For Your Sins by Dea Matrona this whole album is literally my taste in music. it is everything i need in my life. it’s if feminism was a music genre.  my favorites are “So Damn Dangerous”, “Glory Glory (I am Free)”, and “Did Nobody Ever Love You?” -Birdie by Slaughter Beach, Dog this is peak indie music. just some guys in a basement with a low budget and acoustic guitar singing about love and life. my favorites off the album are “Acolyte” and “Gold and Green”   -“mary poppins” by bbno$ yeah this song is… something else. bbno$ is my favorite rapper and i love the parody rap and how unserious he is.  -“girls” by girl in red happy pride month, bitches!!!  for this pride month, i’m giving up men. bc they suck (this is pan erasure and i will not stand for it but it’s ok bc im erasing myself) (that does not make any sense) but im obsessed with this song even tho i have a crush on a man and it’s killing me- i love women, but the women don’t love me back 😭😭

alanis morissette - supposed former infatuation junkie

the way i could write a world-changing 33 1/3 about this album!!! oh my goodness. (this is the kind of album you write after achieving meteoric pop success if you are a serious person, in case any inescapably famous singer-songwriters are taking notes.) but for real -- this album is at once a perfectly-preserved late 90s time capsule (neurotic, stylish, a hint of a sneer, but real hope underwriting it all) and also secretly about us, right now, in the year of our lord 2024. it's fierce and smart and darkly hilarious. it's about going to therapy and getting your dad to go to therapy, and then feeling weird imagining the kind of dark shit your dad must be working through in therapy. it’s about trying to search for the divine while watching a bunch of idiot rich people get influenced into paying $2000 for like past life regression readings or whatever and feeling weird about the idea that they’re searching for the same divine you are, because if they’re looking for it too then it can’t possibly be the real thing, can it? it’s about being the bright young thing who wrote jagged little pill and suddenly finding all of your interpersonal relationships totally unworkable because everybody is too blinded by the brightness of the young thing who wrote jagged little pill to let you also be a human being. it’s about feeling so old already at 24 and looking back on your teenage self at a tender distance as if those days were a lifetime ago, as if you’re actually any wiser now. it’s about wondering if anything you will ever do is ever, ever going to be good enough. alanis’s lyrics here are biting and precocious and the songs are just so chatty (witness “front row” in which she layers four entire extra verses behind the chorus, effectively writing a whole bonus song because the situation is just too complicated to explain in four minutes) and they’re talking about all the same things we talk about now, in the same way we talk about them now, except without all the self-serious posturing so many of our contemporary songwriters fall prey to. (“the couch” is somehow both the most earnest and the least corny song anybody has ever written about therapy.) i know this album must have hit properly when it came out because it was the only thing my mom played in our house for the entire calendar year of 1999, but it feels so preternaturally tailor-made for the moment we’re in now that i can’t believe it hasn’t had one of those improbable tiktok renaissances or whatever that seem to keep happening. highly recommend a revisit or a first acquaintance if you haven’t made one.

BLUE VELVET

this movie is so insane. i love it throughout the first like 3/4 of the movie, i was just so confused and repulsed by wtf i was watching. yet i was mesmerized and now that i’ve finished it, i can only say how amazing it is. i really enjoyed it. it’s so strange and bizarre but such a good story.

the writing is horrendous. but if you don’t think about it that hard, the movies are super entertaining. ep 3 is actually a good movie and you can’t change my mind
