My old roommate gave me his copy which was given to him by his brother which I gave to my brother. This was the first short story book I ever read and it really opened me up to the form. Saunders's satirical and surreal style fit with what I like in other media and its worth checking out if you haven't read anything by him before!

Theres something so nice about being able to sit down and finish a book in under 30
minutes. Time that would have otherwise been spent scrolling mindlessly on a random app is instead spent enriching my brain and taking me on a little journey from beginning to end.
Sometimes I don’t want to read the same book for a week or two. Sometimes you just want to scratch an itch and be done.
I’m not ashamed to include a 17 page book in my total count for the year, and you shouldn’t be either!
Anyways, The Ritual was just that, so 10/10, I recommend not only this book if you’re looking for a little sampler of holiday horror, but ANY little novella you can get your hands on.

I met Erin (@RIOTGRRRL) and Jake (@SLOWDAZZLE) last year after I started using PI.FYI—we organized a meetup before a Jonathan Richman show and immediately clicked over our shared taste in music and similar sensibilities. We started hanging out a lot and had some great times together. I’ve also gotten to know many of their friends, who are all really cool. Erin and Jake started dating a couple of months after the three of us became friends, but our group chat still pops off. Their friendship has meant a lot to me, especially since moving to NYC in 2023, and I really appreciate having them in my life.
