I remember Where the Wild Things Are and other art books the most. Reading The Hobbit when I did (9 or 10?) was pretty important to me. A good mix of adventure. I learned to use a dictionary really well because I had never seen many of the words in the book. Growing up in rural eastern Kentucky coal fields I didn't get a lot of help from the adults around me in that regard. I also still remember the feeling of tension and fear in the scenes with the ogres and Gollum having some comedic elements here and there to make being a little afraid fun. Then I probably got into fantasy novels well above my age shortly after. lol Piers Anthony made several of his books anatomy lessons.

dunno how old i was and it obviously wasn’t the first time i’d read but i believe my brain turned on to make a memory of gleefully poring over a kid fantasy for a reason— stories opened the world for me even as a little’un

The Hobit and LOTR. The Phillip Pullman‘s His Dark Materials. V.C. Andrews (which no one that age should be reading 🤦‍♀️). Harry Potter was just taking off when I was that age, too.

as a young child: Magic Treehouse, The Secrets of Droon, The Boxcar Children (used to tear off the corners of pages and let them dissolve in my mouth, don’t ask me to explain why idk I was a weird kid, but all the boxcar books at my dads house are full of lil nibbles) middle school: Leviathan series by Scott Westerfled, Leven Thumps, Maximum Ride, Bone graphic novels, various superhero novels used to read a ton growing up but kind of stopped reading for fun in high school and through college. had a book club for a few years as an adult but been struggling to get back into causal reading regularly

I'm not a conventionally handsome or even good looking guy. lol I can admit it I'm comfortable being me. Mostly cuz years ago a well dressed older pretty lady with a thick Tennesse accent said "Boy, the girls that know are gonna eat you up." That Appalachian witch cursed me with the best of luck that day.

But I play D&D with a variety of people. As a DM running the game I've learned over the years that you're basically the narrator to the 5 senses for each player's character. So I've upped my descriptor game to give context. That's when I learned that some players have no internal visuals or dialogue... So I have to show them or they can't even guess what a goblin may look like. Many see words. I see them glance down and look as tho they're reading as I describe the world around them. Then I'm not sure if they sorta see it or not. Many also can visualize pretty well, but younger people seem to have no real concept of dimensions. A 30' by 30' room means nothing to them as a reference. Other peoples brains I think are designed to confuse me. lol But I've been alive 4 decades and my own brain baffles me enough sometimes
